2009 Build Maine Awards Celebrated with Capacity Crowd

Six award winners. 300 people. One great night. April 15th AGC Maine celebrated the 2009 Build Maine Award Winners. WGME 13's Diana Ichton hosted the award ceremony following the dinner. 

Over 260 people attended the event hosted at the annual NAWIC construction expo.


The Build Maine Award applicants are judged by a panel for their projects based on the following criteria:

  • Contribution to the community
  • Innovation in construction techniques or materials
  • Environmental sensitivity (community & nature)
  • Responsiveness to client needs

Judges this year include Peter Merfeld of the Maine Turnpike Authority, Loren Clarke AGC Past President, John Nelson of Wright-Peirce and Bob Gurney from the State of Maine Bureau of General Services.

Utility Winner
Reed & Reed Construction of Woolwich accepted an award for the Stetson Mountain Wind Farm. Besides the green aspects of the project by providing clean energy for the equivalant of 60,000 Maine homes the Reed & Reed logged over 140,000 work hours without a single recordable lost time or injury report in tough terrain and weather conditions.

Municipal Winner

Sargent Corporation collected the award for their work on Lewiston's Combined Sewer Outfall Storage Facility. The City of Lewiston used this project in their effort to meet the demand of federal regulators for water and sewer separation saving taxpayers $21 million. Sargent Corp finished the project six months ahead of schedule.

Highway Winner

Pike Industries won the award for the highway division for their work on I 295 Southbound. Their video of the project added another element to the night. Crews working on the innovative approach to road construction worked hard to beat the deadline by an amazing 21 days.

Building Winner

Consigli Construction was awarded the building award for the Bates College Dining Commons. Their LEED Silver project featured the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) software and inclusion of the student and staff to design a central dining and meeting place on campus.

Bridge Winner

The Lane Construction Company Wardwell Division won for replacement of the Tucker Bridge in Moro Plantation. The Tucker Bridge was damaged during heavy flooding closing a 12 mile stretch of road connecting a vital link to Northern Maine.

Specialty/Subcontractor

The year 2009 is full of landmarks for R.J. Grondin & Sons. The company is celebrating their 50th anniversary and the selection of their project The Gateway at Scarborough as a winner. Their profound safety record of 750,000 hours without a los time injury is a significant feat. The Gateway project us well known for its flagship store Cabela's. R.J. Grondin saved time and energy by using unsuitable soils (200,000 cubic yards)to build earthern-berms at the nearby Scarborough Fish & Game range instead of hauling the materials off the site for miles of trucking and fuel costs.
